PROGRAM TOPICS

Overview

This highly interactive two-part course is taught by two psychologists with a combined career focus on working with healthcare professionals that exceeds 50 years. It offers strategies that allow healthcare professionals to not only survive, but to thrive in the new health care environment. And it goes beyond helping to prevent burnout, to show how to create an organizational foundation for joy in medicine, improve practice efficiency, and build trust with patients in a way that makes any professional a better healer. The course also provides 2 credit hours on preventing medical errors which some states require for license renewal.

Dr. Paolini's Topics

  1. 3 Keys to Overcoming Burnout
    • Develop and practice strategies for sustaining personal well-being and professional satisfaction
  2. Designing Your Practice for Maximum Success and Fulfillment
    • Conduct a practical assessment of current medical practice
    • Develop a plan to design it for improved fulfillment and success
  3. Tools for Enlisting Patients into Needed Lifestyle Changes
    • Acquire and practice practical skills to enlist patients into needed lifestyle changes
  4. The Art of Listening and Creating Safe Spaces
    • Increased ability to communicate and enlist others into a collaborative space
  5. Dealing with Conflict and Facilitating Crucial Conversations (Differentiation & Attunement)
    • Improved communication with patients and clinical team
  6. Cultivating Personal & Organizational Health
    • Conduct a personal assessment and plan of care to sustain one's own health and to nurture the health of one's organization
  7. Overcoming Personal and Organizational Immunity to Change
    • Develop an understanding of change management and how to promote and manage personal and organizational change

Dr. Spruill's Topics

  1. Best Medicine to Prevent/Reverse Burnout and Optimize Joy
    • How avoiding the psycho-social aspects of patient care leads to burnout
    • How "leaning in" to the psycho-social aspects of patient care can reverse burnout
  2. How to Cut the Number of "Heartsink" Patient Encounters in Half
    • Discuss the factors that researchers have found contribute to what healthcare providers describe as "difficult" patient encounters
    • Be aware of what patient, clinic and physician characteristics contribute to such encounters and in doing so be able to reduce the frequency of these encounters in medical practice
  3. Introduction to Motivational Interviewing
    • Why simply advising patients to abandon unhealthy lifestyle habits rarely works
    • Key principles and time-sensitive methods of M.I. proven to increase the odds of patients making healthy lifestyle changes
  4. Whole Person Care: Integrating Behavioral Health Services
    • Review the prevalence and co-morbidity of mental health concerns in traditional medical practices
    • Emphasize the need for both co-training of medical and mental health professionals as well as the value of integrating mental health providers as members of the care team in mainstream medical practices
    • Describe the use of "warm hand-offs" as a means of increasing physician time-efficiency and readily connecting those in need of mental health services with integrated mental health providers
  5. Behaviors that Distinguish Emergency Health Care Providers as Exemplary
    • Identify which behaviors and competencies are most important in being viewed by peers as an exemplary health care provider
    • Develop a strategy to incorporate these factors into interactions with peers
    • As an educator, emphasize those factors in the training of new providers
  6. Preventing Medical Errors: Assessment of Suicidal Risk 101
    • Review the challenges such as inadequate training in suicide risk assessment as well as the provider's discomfort in talking about suicide which continue to result in errors resulting in patient suicides
    • Discuss suicide risk factors and warning signs that will enable healthcare professionals to be better able to identify those at imminent risk (including physician peers) and refer them to the appropriate level of care provided by specialists trained in treating suicidal individuals
  7. Preventing Medical Errors Part II: Don't Believe Everything You Think
    • Review of common "thinking errors" that result in misdiagnoses and medical errors

Founding Member of the Faculty of the Emergency Medicine Residency Program, AdventHealth East Orlando

Timothy Spruill earned his M.A. in Counseling Psychology (George Mason University, 1977). After 4 years teaching undergraduate psychology, he worked in a private psychiatric hospital while pursuing his Ed.D. In Counselor Education & Counseling Psychology (Western Michigan University, 1992). Following three years as a rehabilitation psychologist, he was appointed Associate Professor in Counseling Psychology at Andrews University. In 1998 he became the first Behavioral Medicine faculty member at AdventHealth"s Osteopathic Family Medicine residency. After joining the medical staff (Psychiatry Department) in 2001, he became a consultant to the E.D. which ultimately lead to the clinical examination of approximately 4000 suicidal patients over the following 15 years. His role was to assess their imminent risk of self-harm and recommend disposition. Drawing on this expertise, he began conducting day-long training seminars on the ethical assessment and treatment of suicidal patients for mental health professionals in 2010. Since that time, he has presented in 100 cities in 37 states. As a direct result of his extensive consultation in the E.D., In 2007 he was the first psychologist nationally to be invited to join the Emergency Medicine residency faculty. He currently has clinical appointments at three Florida Medical schools and ten scholarly publications. Motivated by his belief that the future of counseling involves integrating services into primary care, in August of 2014, he created an internship program embedded in the Primary Care residency clinic for University of Central Florida graduate students in the Mental Health Counseling Marriage, Couple and Family Therapy Master"s Degree Program. He has maintained his FL license as a Psychologist since 2002.

Ports of Call

Barcelona, Spain

Sagrada Familia and reflection in lake
Your Mediterranean journey begins in Barcelona, but to treat this vibrant Catalan capital as a mere departure point is to miss the first, and arguably one of the most captivating, chapters of your adventure. A top European center for art, architecture, design, and cuisine, this stylish city has its own distinct language and culture, a rhythm that invites you to slow down and savor. We strongly encourage you to arrive one or two days before your cruise embarks. This allows you to acclimate to the new time zone and immerse yourself in a city that masterfully blends ancient Roman history with avant-garde modernism. It’s the perfect way to decompress, ensuring you step aboard your vessel relaxed, inspired, and already rich with new experiences.
Barcelona, Spain

Getting Your Bearings
Upon landing at Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN), the city is easily accessible. The Aerobús provides a direct and efficient coach service to central points like Plaça de Catalunya. Taxis are plentiful and offer a fixed rate to the city center, providing a hassle-free transfer directly to your hotel. Once settled, the city’s excellent metro system and walkable neighborhoods make exploration a delight.

A Suggested Pre-Cruise Itinerary - Day 1: The Soul of Old Barcelona
Begin your exploration in the Barri Gòtic (Gothic Quarter), the true soul of old Barcelona. Lose yourself in its labyrinth of narrow, winding streets that open unexpectedly onto sun-drenched plazas. Your morning walk should lead you to the magnificent Catedral de Barcelona, a masterpiece of Catalan Gothic architecture. Take a moment to admire its serene cloister, home to 13 white geese. From there, wander to the Plaça de Sant Jaume, the city's political heart, flanked by the impressive City Hall and the Palau de la Generalitat de Catalunya.
Barcelona, Spain

For lunch, bypass the tourist-heavy main drags and duck into a small, authentic *bodega* or tapas bar in the adjacent El Born district. This is your chance to sample local specialties like *patatas bravas*, *pimientos de padrón*, and paper-thin slices of *jamón ibérico*. In the afternoon, continue through the fashionable El Born, home to independent boutiques and artisan workshops. Here you’ll find the stunning Basilica de Santa Maria del Mar, a breathtaking example of Gothic architecture funded by the area's medieval merchants and sailors. Art lovers should not miss the Museu Picasso, which chronicles the formative years of the legendary artist who once called these streets home.

As evening descends, consider a leisurely stroll to the nearby Barceloneta neighborhood. This former fishing village offers a lively atmosphere and a host of restaurants serving fresh seafood paella with a view of the Mediterranean Sea—a perfect end to your first day.
Barcelona, Spain

Day 2: The Genius of Gaudí
Today is dedicated to the whimsical, nature-inspired modernism of Antoni Gaudí, the architect who shaped Barcelona’s visual identity. Start your morning at his unfinished magnum opus, the Basílica de la Sagrada Família. To fully appreciate this UNESCO World Heritage site and avoid formidable queues, booking your tickets well in advance is essential. The exterior’s intricate facades tell biblical stories, but it’s the interior that will truly leave you breathless. Gaze up at a forest of soaring columns that branch out like trees, while sunlight streams through colossal stained-glass windows, bathing the nave in a kaleidoscope of color.
Barcelona, Spain

From there, make your way to Passeig de Gràcia, Barcelona’s most elegant avenue. Here, you’ll find two more of Gaudí’s iconic residential buildings. Admire the fantastical, dragon-scaled roof and skeletal balconies of Casa Batlló and the undulating stone façade of Casa Milà, affectionately known as 'La Pedrera' (The Stone Quarry).

In the afternoon, take a taxi or the metro up to Park Güell. Another of Gaudí’s masterpieces, this public park offers panoramic views over the city and the sea. Wander through its organic-feeling stone structures, viaducts, and sit on the famous, serpentine bench covered in vibrant *trencadís* mosaic. Again, pre-booking your entry to the Monumental Zone is crucial.
Barcelona, Spain

For your final evening, immerse yourself in the local dining scene. The Eixample district offers sophisticated, modern Catalan cuisine, while the charming Gràcia neighborhood provides a more bohemian, village-like atmosphere with countless plazas filled with excellent restaurants. Be sure to try *pa amb tomàquet* (bread rubbed with fresh tomato and olive oil) and toast to your upcoming voyage with a crisp glass of Cava, Catalonia’s sparkling wine.

By investing a day or two in Barcelona before you set sail, you do more than just see the sights. You connect with the city’s proud Catalan spirit, savor its world-class cuisine, and create a foundation of memories that will enrich your entire journey. You’ve worked hard to earn this vacation; give yourself the gift of a truly exceptional beginning.

Marseille (Provence), France

Marseille, France
Marseille is not a polished museum piece; it is France’s oldest and second-largest city, a vibrant, working port with a palpable energy and a history stretching back 2,600 years. Its character is a compelling mix of grit and grandeur, offering a genuine slice of Mediterranean life. The natural starting point is the Vieux Port (Old Port), a bustling U-shaped harbor where fishing boats bob alongside yachts. Here, the daily fish market is a spectacle of local life, and the surrounding quays are lined with cafés perfect for observing the city in motion.
Marseille, France

For the definitive view, make the journey up to the Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde. This Romano-Byzantine basilica, affectionately called "La Bonne Mère" (The Good Mother), offers breathtaking 360-degree panoramas of the city, the sea, and the surrounding islands. We recommend taking the tourist train or a taxi for the steep ascent to conserve time and energy. Back at sea level, lose yourself in Le Panier, the city's oldest quarter. Its maze of narrow, winding streets, ochre-colored buildings, and artisan workshops feels a world away from the grand 19th-century boulevards elsewhere.

Marseille also serves as the essential gateway to the broader Provence region. A popular day excursion leads to the elegant city of Aix-en-Provence, the refined counterpoint to Marseille's urban dynamism, known for its fountains, markets, and ties to the artist Cézanne. Alternatively, for a stunning natural escape, head to the charming fishing village of Cassis, the launching point for boat tours into the Calanques National Park—a series of dramatic limestone fjords with brilliant turquoise water. Whether you immerse yourself in the city's layered history or venture into the Provençal countryside, Marseille offers a rich and authentic experience.

Livorno (Florence/Pisa), Italy

Aerial view of Livorno, Tuscany
Livorno is less a destination in itself and more a golden ticket to the heart of Tuscany. The critical decision for your day here is choosing between the artistic grandeur of Florence and the iconic architecture of Pisa, both accessible via a significant journey from the port.

The primary draw is, of course, Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance. A 75- to 90-minute journey by train or coach transports you to a city of overwhelming beauty. A day trip here demands a clear, focused plan. We strongly advise choosing one major museum—either the Uffizi Gallery for its masterpieces by Botticelli and Leonardo, or the Accademia Gallery to stand in awe before Michelangelo's David. Pre-booking tickets is absolutely essential to avoid wasting precious hours in line. Beyond the museums, the city's magic is in its streets. Stroll across the jewelry-laden Ponte Vecchio, marvel at the sheer scale of Brunelleschi's Duomo, and find a small trattoria for an authentic plate of fresh pasta. Always be mindful of the clock; the return journey is just as long.

For a more manageable, yet equally memorable day, Pisa is an excellent choice. The main attraction is the Piazza dei Miracoli, or 'Field of Miracles,' where the legendary Leaning Tower, the magnificent Cathedral, and the Baptistery create an unforgettable architectural ensemble. The experience is more concentrated and less sprawling than Florence, allowing for a more relaxed pace. Many travelers wisely pair Pisa with a visit to nearby Lucca, a beautifully preserved medieval city encircled by intact Renaissance-era walls, perfect for a leisurely walk or bike ride.

Should you prefer to stay local, Livorno offers its own modest charms. Explore the Venezia Nuova district, a network of canals reminiscent of its more famous namesake, or visit the bustling Mercato Centrale for a taste of authentic local life.

Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy

Rome, Italy
Civitavecchia serves a singular purpose: it is the industrial gateway to Rome. The Eternal City lies roughly 75 to 90 minutes away by road or rail, making your time ashore a logistical challenge that rewards strategy over spontaneity. We cannot overstate the importance of this commute; treat the journey as a tactical necessity to access one of the most culturally dense cities on earth.

With a typical port day, attempting to see 'everything' guarantees nothing but exhaustion. We strongly recommend curating your day around one of three distinct tracks to ensure a quality experience.
Rome, Italy

First, the Imperial Track. Focus on the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill. Walking the Via Sacra offers a tangible connection to the origins of Western law and governance. However, admission lines here can consume hours; pre-purchased, timed-entry tickets are not optional—they are essential.

Second, the Vatican Track. St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museums hold an overwhelming concentration of artistic wealth. Standing beneath Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling is profound, but the crowds are equally intense. Strict dress codes (shoulders and knees covered) are enforced, and guided access is the only way to navigate the vast collections efficiently within a limited window.
Rome, Italy

Third, the Centro Storico. For those who prefer atmosphere over checklists, a walking tour of the historic center offers a more relaxed pace. Start at the Pantheon—the world’s best-preserved ancient building—then wander to Piazza Navona and the Trevi Fountain. This approach allows time for a proper Roman lunch. Avoid restaurants directly facing major monuments; walk two streets back to find authentic cacio e pepe or carciofi alla giudia (Jewish-style artichokes). A rushed sandwich does a disservice to Italian culinary heritage, whereas a seated meal offers a necessary respite from the sensory overload.

Regardless of your choice, Rome demands respect for the clock. Always build a significant buffer for your return trip to Civitavecchia to ensure a stress-free conclusion to a spectacular day.

Naples, Italy

The colorful coastal town of Atrani, Italy, seen from its beach on the Amalfi Coast. The historic architecture, featuring arched stone viaducts and the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Maddalena, is set against a mountain backdrop under a clear blue sky.
Naples is a destination that demands a choice: do you dive into the chaotic, vibrant heart of the city, or use it as a strategic launchpad for the world-class treasures surrounding it? As a port of call, Naples offers an embarrassment of riches, but the sheer volume of options requires a disciplined itinerary. The most critical advice we can offer is to resist the urge to do everything; traffic in Campania is notorious, and overpacking your day often leads to stress rather than enjoyment.
Naples, Italy

For history enthusiasts, the primary draw is the shadow of Mount Vesuvius. Pompeii remains the headline attraction, offering a sprawling, visceral look at Roman life frozen in time. However, we often direct clients toward the smaller, better-preserved site of Herculaneum. Because it was buried in mud rather than ash, Herculaneum retains multi-story buildings and wooden elements that perished in Pompeii, all within a footprint that is much easier to navigate in a few hours.
Naples, Italy

If you prefer coastal glamour, the Bay of Naples is your gateway. A high-speed hydrofoil can transport you to the Isle of Capri, famous for the Blue Grotto and high-end boutiques, though be mindful of summer crowds. Alternatively, the cliffside town of Sorrento offers a refined, relaxed atmosphere perfect for a leisurely lunch of fresh seafood and limoncello. While the Amalfi Coast is spectacular, we advise caution when attempting it on a cruise stop; the winding roads are breathtaking but slow, leaving little room for error in your return schedule.

Should you choose to stay in Naples itself, prepare for an experience that is gritty, loud, and profoundly authentic. The historic center, Spaccanapoli, is a UNESCO World Heritage site teeming with baroque churches and hidden courtyards. The National Archaeological Museum is essential viewing, as it houses the actual mosaics and artifacts removed from the excavation sites. Finally, this is the birthplace of pizza. Skipping a meal at a historic pizzeria here would be a missed cultural imperative.
Naples, Italy Naples, Italy Naples, Italy Naples, Italy Naples, Italy Naples, Italy A split-level view of cruise passengers kayaking into the vibrant Green Grotto on the island of Capri. Sunlight illuminates the emerald-green sea and dramatic limestone sea stacks, highlighting an iconic shore excursion from the Naples cruise port.

Strait of Messina

Kekirka, Nisos Kekirka (Corfu), Greece

Corfu, Greece
Corfu distinguishes itself from its Cycladic cousins with a lush, green landscape and a cultural identity deeply colored by centuries of Venetian, French, and British influence. This is immediately apparent upon entering its UNESCO-listed Old Town, a captivating labyrinth of narrow, cobbled lanes (kantounia) that open onto elegant squares. The town is anchored by two formidable fortresses: the Old Fortress, perched on a rocky promontory, offers panoramic views and a tangible sense of history, while the New Fortress looms over the old port.
Corfu, Greece

The heart of social life is the Liston, a graceful arcade of cafés modeled on Paris's Rue de Rivoli, facing the vast Spianada square—one of the largest in Europe. It’s the perfect place to pause for a coffee or a local ginger beer (tsitsibira) and observe the rhythm of the city. For a deeper cultural dive, the Church of Saint Spyridon, with its striking bell tower, houses the relics of the island's patron saint.

While the Old Town can easily fill a day, those seeking coastal beauty can venture to Paleokastritsa (a 30-40 minute drive), renowned for its dramatic cliffs and emerald coves. Alternatively, the Achilleion Palace, built for an Austrian empress, provides a glimpse into 19th-century royal life amid beautiful gardens. Corfu offers a rich, layered experience, blending grand European architecture with the warm hospitality and stunning scenery of the Ionian Sea.
Corfu, Greece

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Dubrovnik, Croatia
Dubrovnik is not merely a backdrop; it is a complete, immersive historical experience. The moment you see the formidable stone walls rising from the Adriatic, you understand its acclaim as the ‘Pearl of the Adriatic.’ The main cruise port at Gruž is a short bus or taxi ride from the Pile Gate, the primary entrance to the pedestrian-only Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Once inside, the city unfolds along the Stradun, a wide, limestone-paved thoroughfare. While it’s tempting to follow the crowds to landmarks like the Rector’s Palace or the Franciscan Monastery, the real magic lies in exploring the labyrinth of narrow side streets and quiet courtyards. Two experiences, however, are truly essential for a day visit.
Dubrovnik, Croatia

First, walk the city walls. We recommend going as early as possible or later in the afternoon to avoid the intense midday sun and the peak crowds that can make the circuit feel congested. The two-kilometer loop provides unparalleled, evolving views of the terracotta rooftops, the shimmering sea, and the nearby islands. Second, take the cable car to the summit of Mount Srđ. The panoramic vista from the top puts the city's magnificent geography into perspective and is unforgettable.

For a more active perspective, a sea kayaking tour offers a unique view of the city's scale from the water. While its recent screen fame is a popular draw, Dubrovnik’s true identity is that of the resilient Republic of Ragusa, a maritime power that has been meticulously restored. It is a world-class destination where strategic timing is the key to fully appreciating its splendor.

Bay of Kotor

Kotor, Montenegro

Kotor, Montenegro
The arrival into Kotor is an event in itself. The deep, fjord-like Bay of Kotor is a dramatic waterway flanked by steep, dark mountains, and the sail-in provides a stunning introduction to one of the Adriatic's most remarkable destinations. Once ashore, you step directly into the Stari Grad (Old Town), a UNESCO World Heritage site and a wonderfully preserved labyrinth of cobblestone lanes, hidden squares, and Venetian-era architecture.
Kotor, Montenegro

The town is entirely encircled by formidable medieval walls that snake their way up the adjoining mountain. For the physically active, the port's signature experience is the strenuous but rewarding climb up the 1,350 steps to the Fortress of San Giovanni. The panoramic view from the top—looking down on the triangular Old Town, the bay, and the docked ships—is one of the most iconic in the Mediterranean. We recommend tackling this in the morning to avoid the midday sun and crowds.

For those preferring a more relaxed day, the Old Town itself is the main attraction. It’s a place to wander without a fixed agenda. You can visit the 12th-century Cathedral of Saint Tryphon, browse the small shops, and observe the town's famous feline residents. The true pleasure of Kotor lies in finding a quiet piazza, ordering a coffee or a glass of local Vranac wine, and simply absorbing the historic atmosphere. For a change of scenery, a short boat or taxi ride to the impossibly picturesque village of Perast offers a quieter, equally beautiful alternative.
Kotor, Montenegro Kotor, Montenegro Kotor, Montenegro Kotor, Montenegro Kotor, Montenegro Kotor, Montenegro Kotor, Montenegro Kotor, Montenegro

Zadar, Croatia

Narodni Trg and Zadar City Hall in the historic old town
Zadar offers a compelling slice of Dalmatian life, distinct from its more famous neighbors. Its charm lies not in overwhelming monuments but in a rich history seamlessly blended with innovative public art. The city's heart is its compact, marble-paved Old Town, a peninsula filled with Roman ruins, medieval churches, and lively cafes.

The main draw is the magnificent seaside promenade, the Riva. Here you'll find Zadar's two most unique attractions. The Sea Organ is an architectural sound art object; listen as the waves push air through underwater pipes, creating a hauntingly beautiful, ever-changing melody. Steps away, the Greeting to the Sun is a massive, sun-powered glass disc that absorbs solar energy during the day to create a dazzling light show after sunset—a fascinating piece of engineering even in daylight.

Beyond the modern marvels, delve into history at the Roman Forum, the largest on the eastern Adriatic coast. Admire the iconic 9th-century St. Donatus Church, a circular pre-Romanesque masterpiece, and consider climbing the bell tower of the adjacent St. Anastasia's Cathedral for panoramic views of the red-tiled roofs and the shimmering archipelago.

The Old Town is easily explored on foot. Wander its narrow streets, discover hidden courtyards, and enjoy a coffee on the bustling People's Square (Narodni Trg). While the famous Krka and Plitvice Lakes national parks are in the region, reaching them requires a full-day commitment and is best done via a structured excursion due to the travel time. For a day in port, Zadar's peninsular core offers more than enough to create a memorable and relaxed Croatian experience.

Trieste (Venice), Italy

Trieste is not a substitute for Venice; it is a destination with its own proud, distinct identity. Where Venice is quintessentially Italian, Trieste feels more like a seaside Vienna, a legacy of its long history as the primary port of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. This Hapsburg influence is immediately apparent in the city’s magnificent centerpiece, Piazza Unità d'Italia. As one of Europe’s largest squares opening directly onto the sea, its perimeter is lined with grand neoclassical buildings and historic literary cafés where figures like James Joyce once wrote.

A short journey along the coast leads to the fairytale Castello di Miramare, the seaside residence of Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian. Its lush gardens and preserved 19th-century interiors offer a fascinating glimpse into royal life. Back in the city, you can explore the remains of a Roman theatre, wander along the charming Canal Grande, and climb San Giusto Hill for panoramic views from its cathedral and castle.

Trieste is the undisputed capital of Italian coffee culture, home to the Illy brand. No visit is complete without savoring a cappuccino or an espresso in a historic café like Caffè degli Specchi. For those determined to see Venice, a day trip is feasible but requires careful planning. The train journey is approximately two hours each way, which makes for a long and potentially rushed day. A more rewarding approach is often to embrace Trieste itself—to enjoy the uncrowded elegance of its streets and appreciate a corner of Italy that feels entirely unique.

Why Protect your Trip?

Whether you’re planning your next trip or you recently booked one, travel insurance can help smooth over many unexpected travel glitches—while putting your mind at ease, knowing you’re off the hook for covered expenses that could arise from them.

Allianz Travel Insurance plans can provide you benefits and professional support when a covered situation comes up before or during your trip. The following examples may qualify for benefits:

  • Cancelling your trip after unexpectedly becoming too sick to travel
  • Taking care of a sick or injured traveling companion
  • Having to end your trip early due to a family emergency
  • Dealing with a flight delay or cancellation
  • Needing to buy personal items if your luggage is lost or stolen
  • Missing your cruise departure after a covered flight delay

You also can contact our travel protection partner Allianz Global Assistance’s 24/7, award-winning customer service for on-the-go assistance with issues like a medical emergency, replacing your lost passport, or making reservations around the world. To be eligible for a time-sensitive waiver of pre-existing medical condition exclusions, purchase your travel insurance plan within 14 days of initial trip deposit (other purchase requirements and conditions apply). Specific plan benefits may vary. Please review your plan details for more information.

What Can Travel Insurance Help Protect?

Allianz Travel Insurance plans can protect you before and during your trip—keeping you, your loved ones, and your travel budget safer. Benefits vary by plan, and these are brief descriptions. Please read your plan documents for details.

TRIP CANCELLATION

Reimburses your prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses if you need to cancel your trip due to a covered reason, such as you, a family member, or traveling companion experiencing a covered illness or injury. Examples include:

  • A doctor says you or a traveling companion is too sick to fly
  • Your parent or child requires hospitalization
  • You need to attend the birth of a family member’s child
  • You have a traffic accident (not breakdown) on the way to the airport
  • A storm shuts down your airport for 24 hours or more

TRIP INTERRUPTION

Reimburses your unused, non-refundable travel expenses and increased transportation costs during your trip if you have to return home early due to a covered reason, for instance when a family member has a qualifying medical emergency and needs your care. Examples include:

  • You have a covered illness or injury and a doctor says you must return home
  • A family member has a qualifying injury and needs your care
  • A covered emergency, like a fire or flood, makes your home uninhabitable

TRAVEL DELAY

If you have a covered delay while traveling, travel insurance can reimburse you for meals, accommodations, and transportation expenses when your trip is delayed for a minimum number of consecutive hours for a covered reason. Minimum number of hours varies by plan.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL AND DENTAL CARE

Reimburses your expenses related to covered medical and dental emergencies* that might occur on your trip. This benefit can be especially helpful if you have a covered emergency outside the United States, as most health insurance policies won’t cover you outside the country. Examples include:

  • You slip and break your ankle while sightseeing
  • You get food poisoning while sampling the local cuisine
  • You lose a filling and need immediate dental treatment*

*A sublimit and maximum apply for this benefit. Check your plan documents for details.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TRANSPORTATION

Arranges and pays for medically necessary transportation following a covered injury or illness to the nearest appropriate medical facility to receive care and get you home after treatment.

BAGGAGE LOSS, DAMAGE, or THEFT

Reimburses the replacement of your lost, damaged, or stolen luggage and personal items while traveling.

BAGGAGE DELAY

Reimburses essential items purchased during your trip if your baggage is delayed for a minimum number of hours (varies by plan).

CHANGE FEE
