Dr. Michael J. Tan is the Division Chief of Infectious Disease and Physician Lead for Summa Health Medical Group in Akron, Ohio, where he also serves as Medical Director of the Summa Health Clinical Research Center. Academically, he is a Professor of Internal Medicine at Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED), where he serves as Section Chief of the Infectious Disease section of the Drugs and Therapeutics course. Board-certified in internal medicine and infectious disease, Dr. Tan earned his medical degree from NEOMED, completed his residency training at Summa Health System, and completed his infectious disease fellowship at the University of South Florida.
A distinguished leader in medical society governance, Dr. Tan is a Master of the American College of Physicians (MACP) and a Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (FIDSA). Within the ACP, he has held extensive national leadership positions, including serving as Treasurer, member of the Board of Regents, and Governor for the Ohio Chapter. He has guided key governance and financial operations as chair of the Financial Policy and Audit Committee, while also contributing to national committees dedicated to credentials, awards, mastership, and annual scientific programming.
Dr. Tan’s research focuses on multicenter controlled clinical trials evaluating novel therapeutics for Clostridioides difficile infections, complex skin and soft tissue infections, and pneumonia. A frequent national lecturer, he is the co-editor of major reference texts, including the ACP Press Expert Guide to Infectious Diseases and Rapid Review Microbiology and Immunology. In recognition of his clinical expertise, Dr. Tan is consistently named among the Best Doctors in America.

Tammie Lee Demler, PharmD, BS Pharm, MBA, RPh, BCGP, BCPP, is a dually Board-Certified Specialist in both Psychiatric and Geriatric Pharmacy. She currently serves as the Director of Pharmacy Services and Pharmacy residency training at the New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) at the Buffalo Psychiatric Center. She received her Doctor of Pharmacy, Master of Business Administration, and Bachelor of Science degrees from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo.
Dr. Demler holds numerous academic appointments, including Clinical Associate Professor for the SUNY Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences; Clinical Assistant Professor at the SUNY School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry, D'Youville College School of Pharmacy, and the University of Florida College of Pharmacy; and Clinical Instructor for the Erie County Community College Pharmacy Technician Certification Program. Additionally, she collaborates with the National Association of the Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) and the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties (BPS) to develop board examinations that establish minimum competencies for new practitioners. Prior to her academic and institutional career, her clinical practice focused on ambulatory care in community pharmacy.
A prolific writer and researcher, Dr. Demler has authored numerous original articles and expert reviews. She is a regular contributor to U.S. Pharmacist and a reviewer for Pharmacist's Letter. Her published work includes launching the book Pharmacotherapeutics for Advanced Nursing Practice, authoring a chapter on insomnia in the American College of Clinical Pharmacy's Ambulatory Care Self-Assessment, and providing expert pharmacotherapeutic consultation for titles such as Side Effects of Drugs: Annual Volume 36 and Clinical Consult to Psychiatric Nursing for Advanced Practice.
Dr. Demler presents medication continuing education programs nationally and internationally and is an Academic Educator for the New York State Medicaid Prescriber Education program. A recognized leader and local media personality, she has hosted her own weekly TV talk show and radio segment, served as President of both the Pharmacists Society of the State of New York and the Pharmacists Association of Western New York, and received numerous awards acknowledging her professional and community-based contributions.
Marni Brooks, BSc, MSW, MD, CCFP, FCFP
Chair, Ontario Medical Association Medical Interest Group in Cannabinoid Medicine
Dr. Marni Brooks began her education at McGill university where she completed her Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in psychology and focused her thesis in the area of pediatric pain. She was then sponsored by a physician in Sydney, Australia to assist in his pediatric pain research.
Upon her return to Canada, she completed a Master of Social Work degree where she spent years of training studying women's health and addiction as field placements. Her interest in addiction continued after she completed her medical degree and family medicine residency at the University of Toronto.
She is now a Fellow in Family Medicine and, until now, has explored working in the areas of family medicine, sleep medicine, addiction medicine and cannabinoid medicine. Dr. Brooks also sat on the OMA Executive of the Section on Addiction Medicine for nearly a decade where she assisted with negotiations with the Ministry of Health on behalf of the members in her section. Most recently, she founded and is the Chair of the OMA Medical Interest Group in Cannabinoid Medicine, the first such group in the country.
Dr. Brooks currently focuses her work in Cannabinoid Medicine, her two main interests. She hopes to help educate her peers, the community and patients, as well as advocate for them, on the benefits of cannabis for a variety of health conditions, either as sole therapy or in conjunction with other treatments. Other experiences in Cannabinoid Medicine include speaking on the Northwinds panel for insurance providers and acting as an expert witness on the safety and medical uses of cannabis in a sentencing hearing.

Rotterdam, The Netherlands
Arriving a few days early or lingering after you disembark allows you to peel back the layers of this complex metropolis. A walk through the city center is a lesson in 20th-century history; largely flattened in World War II, Rotterdam chose not to replicate the past but to build a new future. This decision is visible everywhere, from the gleaming, angular Centraal Station to the soaring Erasmus Bridge, a graceful harp-like structure nicknamed “The Swan.” The most famous examples of this architectural playground are the Cube Houses (Kijk-Kubus), a bizarre and brilliant forest of tilted yellow homes designed by Piet Blom. You can even step inside a show-cube to experience the disorienting, ingenious use of space. Nearby, the Markthal is an essential first stop. This massive arch-shaped building is both a residential complex and a spectacular food hall, its interior ceiling covered in a colossal artwork of fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Inside, stalls overflow with everything from aged Dutch cheeses and fresh stroopwafels to Spanish tapas and Vietnamese street food.
Devote a day to the city’s exceptional art and design. The Museumpark is the cultural heart, home to several key institutions. While the main Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is undergoing a long-term renovation, its collection has been made accessible in a revolutionary way at the Depot. This stunning, mirrored bowl of a building is the world’s first publicly accessible art depot. Here, you can wander through vast storage racks containing over 150,000 artworks, observing conservators at work and gaining a unique, behind-the-scenes look at how a world-class museum functions. Nearby, the Kunsthal presents a constantly shifting calendar of high-quality, often provocative exhibitions spanning art, design, and photography. For a different perspective, the Nederlands Fotomuseum and the Maritime Museum offer deep dives into the nation’s visual and seafaring histories.
To understand Rotterdam’s present, you must also seek out its past. A short journey by tram or metro takes you to historic Delfshaven, a district that miraculously survived the 1940 bombing. Here, you’ll find the gabled canal houses and tranquil waterways that characterize classic Dutch imagery. It’s a peaceful enclave where you can visit the Pilgrim Fathers' Church, from which the Pilgrims departed for the Americas, and browse antique shops along the waterfront. Another pocket of history is the Oude Haven (Old Harbor), where historic barges are moored against a backdrop of modern cafes and the striking Witte Huis, Europe’s first “skyscraper.” For a truly local experience, take a water taxi. These zippy yellow-and-black boats are a fast, fun way to navigate the Maas River, offering unparalleled views of the skyline and the sheer scale of the port.
Rotterdam’s energy extends well beyond its main sights. The Witte de Withstraat is the city’s liveliest street, lined with independent galleries, fashion boutiques, and excellent bars and restaurants. For a more industrial-chic, artisanal vibe, cross the river to Katendrecht. Once the sailors’ quarter, it’s now a culinary hotspot centered around the Fenix Food Factory, a converted warehouse where local producers sell bread, cheese, and craft beer.
Its central location also makes Rotterdam an ideal base for exploring further. The UNESCO World Heritage site of Kinderdijk, with its iconic 19 windmills lining the polders, is a short waterbus ride away. The charming city of Delft, home of the famous blue-and-white pottery and painter Johannes Vermeer, is just a 15-minute train ride. The Hague, the seat of the Dutch government and home to the Mauritshuis museum (where you’ll find Vermeer’s “Girl with a Pearl Earring”), is equally accessible. With direct, frequent trains to Amsterdam-Schiphol Airport, the logistics of a pre- or post-cruise stay are effortless, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in a city that is as intellectually stimulating as it is visually stunning.
At Sea - Cruising
Akureyri, Iceland
The town itself is a pleasure to explore on foot. A short walk from the pier leads to the town center, where you can ascend the steps to the iconic Akureyrarkirkja, a Lutheran church whose commanding presence offers fine views over the fjord. Nearby, the Akureyri Botanical Garden is a peaceful oasis and one of the northernmost botanical gardens in the world, showcasing a remarkable collection of arctic and temperate flora.
However, Akureyri’s primary value for most visitors lies in the world-class excursions it enables. The most popular is a trip to Goðafoss, the ‘Waterfall of the Gods,’ a powerful and historically significant cascade that is both beautiful and easily accessible. For those with a full day, the Lake Mývatn region is an unforgettable journey into a geothermal wonderland of bubbling mud pots, surreal lava formations at Dimmuborgir, and vast volcanic craters. The Mývatn Nature Baths offer a more tranquil, less crowded alternative to the Blue Lagoon.
For a marine adventure, whale watching tours depart directly from the harbor. The calm, nutrient-rich waters of Eyjafjörður are one of the world's most reliable places to see humpback whales, often just a short boat ride from port. Akureyri provides the perfect balance: a delightful town experience combined with direct access to some of Iceland’s most essential landscapes.
Isafjordur, Iceland
However, the primary reason for a visit is the staggering natural landscape that surrounds it. From the port, accessible excursions unlock the region's best features. A short boat trip to Vigur Island reveals a remarkable bird sanctuary, home to puffins, eider ducks, and Arctic terns in season. For a truly memorable experience, consider the journey to the magnificent Dynjandi waterfall; be advised, it's a significant drive over a mountain pass, but the view of its cascading tiers is a powerful reward. Kayaking on the serene fjord waters provides another way to connect with the immense scale of the landscape. Isafjordur offers a profound immersion into one of Iceland's most spectacular and isolated settings.
Reykjavik, Iceland
The skyline is dominated by the magnificent Hallgrímskirkja church; ascending its tower provides a panoramic view of the city’s colorful rooftops and the surrounding bay. A short walk leads to the waterfront, where the stunning, glass-paneled Harpa Concert Hall glimmers beside the Old Harbour. This area is the departure point for whale-watching excursions and is lined with outstanding seafood restaurants. For a dose of history, the National Museum of Iceland offers a comprehensive look at the nation's past, from settlement to the present day.
With a single day, a choice must be made. You can either immerse yourself in the city's culture or venture into Iceland's legendary landscapes. The famed Golden Circle—a circuit including the tectonic plates at Þingvellir National Park, the powerful Gullfoss waterfall, and the erupting Geysir geothermal area—is a full-day commitment. It's an unforgettable experience but will consume nearly all your time ashore.
A more manageable alternative is a visit to the Blue Lagoon for a soak in its geothermal, silica-rich waters. It’s about a 50-minute drive from the port, and pre-booking is absolutely essential, often weeks or months in advance.
We recommend choosing one path for your day: either fully explore the vibrant streets, shops, and museums of Reykjavik, or dedicate your time to one of the major natural attractions. Trying to do both will likely feel rushed and incomplete.
Glasgow (Greenock), Scotland
Glasgow is a city of striking contrasts, where grand Victorian architecture stands alongside modern design, and a proud industrial past has given way to a vibrant, creative present. Once you arrive, the city is very walkable. A great starting point is George Square, the city's civic heart, surrounded by impressive municipal buildings. From there, you can explore the high-end shops of the 'Style Mile' or the more independent boutiques and restaurants of the Merchant City.
For art and culture, the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is a world-class institution with an astonishingly diverse collection, from Salvador Dalí's 'Christ of Saint John of the Cross' to a WWII Spitfire. Admission is free, making it an excellent use of time. Architecture enthusiasts should seek out the works of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the city's most famous design visionary. While the Glasgow School of Art remains closed after a fire, you can still appreciate his style at the Willow Tea Rooms.
For a dose of history, the medieval Glasgow Cathedral is a magnificent example of Gothic architecture, and the adjacent Necropolis offers panoramic city views from its atmospheric, hilltop perch. If a city excursion feels too rushed, an alternative is a trip to the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond, offering a classic taste of Scottish scenery just a short drive from the port.
Belfast, Northern Ireland
For a deeper understanding of the city's more recent history, a Black Cab tour is essential. These tours, often led by drivers with personal connections to the era, provide a balanced and poignant narrative of 'The Troubles' as you view the political murals of the Shankill and Falls Roads and the towering Peace Wall that still divides them. Alternatively, the city center is a vibrant hub of Victorian architecture, centered around the magnificent City Hall and the lively St. George's Market.
The alternative is a full-day excursion north to the Antrim Coast. This journey showcases the UNESCO-listed Giant's Causeway, an extraordinary landscape of 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, and the scenic coastal drive is an attraction in itself. Be advised, this is an all-or-nothing trip; committing to the coast means forgoing a proper exploration of Belfast. The decision rests on your priorities: profound urban history or breathtaking natural wonder.

TRIP CANCELLATION
Reimburses your prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses if you need to cancel your trip due to a covered reason, such as you, a family member, or traveling companion experiencing a covered illness or injury. Examples include:
- A doctor says you or a traveling companion is too sick to fly
- Your parent or child requires hospitalization
- You need to attend the birth of a family member’s child
- You have a traffic accident (not breakdown) on the way to the airport
- A storm shuts down your airport for 24 hours or more
TRIP INTERRUPTION
Reimburses your unused, non-refundable travel expenses and increased transportation costs during your trip if you have to return home early due to a covered reason, for instance when a family member has a qualifying medical emergency and needs your care. Examples include:
- You have a covered illness or injury and a doctor says you must return home
- A family member has a qualifying injury and needs your care
- A covered emergency, like a fire or flood, makes your home uninhabitable
TRAVEL DELAY
If you have a covered delay while traveling, travel insurance can reimburse you for meals, accommodations, and transportation expenses when your trip is delayed for a minimum number of consecutive hours for a covered reason. Minimum number of hours varies by plan.
EMERGENCY MEDICAL AND DENTAL CARE
Reimburses your expenses related to covered medical and dental emergencies* that might occur on your trip. This benefit can be especially helpful if you have a covered emergency outside the United States, as most health insurance policies won’t cover you outside the country. Examples include:
