PROGRAM TOPICS

Physicians, nurses and support staff have numerous roles and responsibilities which facilitate patient care, satisfaction, and adherence. The presence of expanding technologies, notably electronic medical records, have put increasing demands on expertise as well as taking far more time. This makes it challenging to meet the important aspect of patient-centered care. Patients today can be difficult to manage, demanding, and often quote inaccurate information gleamed online. In addition, test results need to be presented in a timely manner while simultaneously requiring empathic skills when delivering bad news. While treatment advances have increased survival rates for many patients, explaining complex treatment regimens and the potential costs is time consuming and stressful. With the recent WHO acknowledgement of burnout as a disease, more attention is being paid to the physical and psychological demands of being a healthcare professional. Physicians and nurses report increasing levels of job dissatisfaction, physical symptoms such as insomnia, headaches, fatigue, back and neck pain and gastrointestinal distress, and psychological symptoms such as anxiety, irritability, and depression. This course will offer a comprehensive combination of educational and training strategies as well as numerous experiential exercises to combat stress, prevent and treat burnout, and improve not only participant wellness but also lead to an improvement in patient care. Strategies will include relaxation training, cognitive approaches to combat automatic negative thought patterns, mindfulness training, empathic skills communication, and methods to combat perfectionistic thinking patterns. For example, mindfulness has been shown to be an effective antidote and it is possible to incorporate mindfulness into one’s daily routine in a practical and efficient manner. Practicing mindfulness can ease the consequences of stress while simultaneously improving patient care. In addition, perfectionism is common and even encouraged in the medical world. Acceptance to medical school is predicated on academic excellence and thus, in medicine where teamwork, appropriate social behavior, and flexibility may be as important as academic knowledge, this can feel threatening for the physician who has succeeded through perfectionistic academic self-induced pressure. Committing a mistake, although expected by all in this field, can feel overwhelming and unacceptable to a perfectionist and can lead to symptoms of stress, depression, and even suicide. Solutions to maladaptive perfectionism include cognitive-behavior therapy an d coaching which will be emphasized. Topics:

    • Give examples of the concepts of patient-centered care and the strategies which emphasize them

Alice D. Domar, PhD
Chief Compassion Officer, Inception Senior staff psychologist, department of Ob/Gyn, Beth Israel Lahey Heath Associate Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive biology, part-time, Harvard Medical SchoolAlice D. Domar, PhD is a pioneer in the application of mind/body medicine to women's health issues. She not only established the first Mind/Body Center for Women's Health, but also conducts ongoing ground-breaking research in the field. Her research focuses on the relationship between stress and different women's health conditions, and creating innovative programs to help women decrease physical and psychological symptoms. Dr. Domar received her M.A. and Ph.D. in Health Psychology from Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Ferkauf School of Professional Psychology of Yeshiva University. Her post-doctoral training was at Beth Israel Hospital, Deaconess Hospital, and Children’s Hospital, all in Boston. She has conducted research on infertility, breast cancer, menopausal symptoms, ovarian cancer, pregnancy, and premenstrual syndrome. Dr. Domar has earned an international reputation as one of the country's top women's health experts. She is currently the Executive Director of the Domar Centers for Mind/Body Health, and the Director of Mind/Body Services at Boston IVF. She is an associate professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Biology, part-time, at Harvard Medical School, and a senior staff psychologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.She is also the Chief Compassion Officer at Inception. Dr. Domar has compiled an impressive list of accomplishments as a best-selling author, media authority and sought-after public speaker. She is the author of numerous books, including the national best seller “Self-Nurture”, and is on the advisory board for Parents Magazine. She was on the Board of Experts for ShareCare.com and was a columnist for Redbook and Health magazines. She was also a featured expert for LLuminari and on the online social health network BeWell.com. She served on the board of Resolve for ten years. Three of her books have been finalists for the Books for a Better Life Award. She was also the Series Editor for a series of mind/body books by Harvard Medical Publications/Simon and Schuster. She is the narrator of the DVD’s “Stress and Relaxation Explained” and “Infertility Explained”, both of which won silver Telly Awards. Dr. Domar has appeared on the Today Show, Good Morning America, CBS This Morning, Dateline NBC, CNN, PBS, and the CBS and NBC Evening News, to name a few. She presents lectures and conducts workshops throughout the US and around the world and went on tour with Oprah in the spring of 2004 and 2005 with the LLuminari team. Perelman and Claudia Cohen Center for Reproductive Medicine and an Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology in the Departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Reproductive Medicine, and Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medicine. She also serves as an Associate Attending Psychologist at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. A nationally recognized expert in reproductive mental health, she holds significant leadership roles, including serving as the current Board Chair for RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association, Past Chair of the Mental Health Professional Group of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), and Immediate Past President of the Society for Sex Therapy and Research (SSTAR). She is also the co-creator of FertiCalm and FertiStrong, pioneering digital apps designed to reduce distress for individuals experiencing infertility. Her clinical and research focus covers the emotional aspects of infertility, IVF, third-party reproduction, oncofertility, fertility preservation, and sexual dysfunction. San Juan, Puerto Rico

This 500-year-old walled city is a UNESCO World Heritage site best explored independently on foot, allowing you to bypass crowded bus tours and move at your own pace.

Your priority should be the two massive citadels guarding the coast. Start at Castillo San Cristóbal, the largest Spanish fortification in the New World, before walking the scenic coastal trail to the iconic Castillo San Felipe del Morro. The sheer scale of these defenses is humbling, and the expansive green lawn leading to El Morro—often dotted with kites—provides a dramatic contrast to the deep blue Atlantic.

Between the forts lies a grid of blue cobblestone streets (adoquines) lined with vibrant colonial architecture. The joy here is aimless wandering, though the heat can be intense; stay hydrated and wear sturdy walking shoes to navigate the hills. For a cultural pause, visit the Cathedral of San Juan Bautista, the resting place of Ponce de León.

Culinary exploration is essential. Skip the generic tourist traps near the pier and head deeper into the city. Seek out mofongo (garlicky mashed plantains) at a local staple like El Jibarito or Café Puerto Rico. While the nearby beaches of Condado are beautiful, they require a taxi and contend with traffic. Unless you have visited before, we advise dedicating your day entirely to the history and atmosphere within the city walls, finishing perhaps with a Piña Colada at Barrachina, right in the heart of the old town.

TRIP CANCELLATION

Reimburses your prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses if you need to cancel your trip due to a covered reason, such as you, a family member, or traveling companion experiencing a covered illness or injury. Examples include:

  • A doctor says you or a traveling companion is too sick to fly
  • Your parent or child requires hospitalization
  • You need to attend the birth of a family member’s child
  • You have a traffic accident (not breakdown) on the way to the airport
  • A storm shuts down your airport for 24 hours or more

TRIP INTERRUPTION

Reimburses your unused, non-refundable travel expenses and increased transportation costs during your trip if you have to return home early due to a covered reason, for instance when a family member has a qualifying medical emergency and needs your care. Examples include:
