This series of lectures is designed to update the primary care physician on common psychiatric conditions and controversies in clinical care throughout the life span. The seminar will be relevant to family practitioners, internists, pediatricians and other physicians and health professionals who manage patients with mental disorders.

1:00 pm-3:30 pm Childhood Psychiatric Disorders: Do We Treat Too Much or Too Little?
At the conclusion of this session the participant should be able to:
Describe the common presentations of childhood psychiatric disorders such as depression, bipolar affective disorder, pervasive developmental disorders, ADHD, anxiety.
Recognize the difficulties in diagnosing psychiatric disorders of childhood.
Discuss the clinical implications of using neuroimaging in the diagnosis of childhood psychiatric disorders.
Formulate treatment strategies, recognizing the controversies in the use of psychoactive medications in this population.
Discuss recognition of genetics in childhood psychiatric disorders and the role of the family in the treatment implementation.
3:30 pm-5:00 pm Treatment of Psychiatric Disorders in Pregnancy: Can We Treat Safely?
At the conclusion of this session the participant should be able to:
Discuss the implications of psychiatric disorders during pregnancy.
Define behavioral teratogenesis and perinatal syndromes.
Explain risks and benefits of using certain medications.

At the conclusion of this session the participant should be able to:
Describe substances of abuse and presentations across age groups.
Comfortably use available screening tools for substance abuse recognition.
Develop cessation strategies.
10:30 am-12:00 pm Sexuality and Mental Health: Can You Have One Without the Other?
At the conclusion of the session the participant should be able to:
Elicit psychiatric disorders from sexual dysfunction symptoms.
Understand sexual disorders in context of psychiatric disorders.
Discuss sexual side effects of psychoactive medications and the impact on compliance.
1:00 pm-4:00 pm Depression in the New Millennium: Is the Economy or the Drugs Prescribed the Bigger Risk?
At the conclusion of this session the participant should be able to:
Discuss the depressive spectrum.
Develop recognition and office screening protocols of depression.
Discuss suicide risk populations and recognition.
Be familiar with the controversies associated with antidepressant medications and suicidal ideation.
Be familiar with complementary and alternative medicine treatments available to your patients and their risks and benefits.

8:00 am-10:00 am Recognizing Cognitive and Functional Decline Early: Can We Head Off Dementia?
At the conclusion of this session the participant should be able to:
Define the nosology of mild cognitive impairment.
Incorporate in an office setting screening tools to evaluate cognition and function.
Discuss dietary, life style, and medication management strategies.
Discuss possible pharmacologic strategies.
10:00 am-12:00 pm Treatment of the Neuropsychiatric Syndrome of Dementia: Keeping Patients Safe and Caregivers Sane
At the conclusion of this session the participant should be able to:
Describe the etiologies of dementia and delirium.
Identify the risk factors for developing neuropsychiatric symptoms.
Help define behavioral disorders.
Formulate behavioral plans with the caregivers.
Be familiar with the risks and benefits of medication management.
Be familiar with referral sources in the community.
