Dr. Margaret A. Fitzgerald, DNP, FNP-BC, NP-C, FAANP, CSP, FAAN, DCC, is the founder, president and principal lecturer with Fitzgerald Health Education Associates, Inc. (FHEA), an international provider of nurse practitioner certification preparation and continuing education for healthcare providers. More than 60,000 nurse practitioners have used the Fitzgerald review course to successfully prepare for certification.
An internationally recognized presenter, Dr. Fitzgerald has provided thousands of programs for numerous professional organizations, universities, national and state healthcare associations on a wide variety of topics including clinical pharmacology, assessment, laboratory diagnosis, healthcare and nurse practitioner practice. In addition, she is a family nurse practitioner at the Greater Lawrence Family Health Center, Lawrence, Massachusetts, and adjunct faculty for the Greater Lawrence Family Health Center Family Practice Residency Program. She holds a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, where she received the Alumni Association Award for Clinical Excellence.

Pharmacogenomics
Description: How genetics do influences drug metabolism? What ethnic groups are at greatest
increased risk for genetically‐based adverse effects with select medications? How do
pharmacogenomic factors affect clinical practice? Learn the answers to these questions and
more in this case‐based program.
Objectives:
- Define pharmacogenomics and pharmacogenetics.
- Describe the clinical implications of genetic variations in drug metabolism.
- Identify select at‐risk populations for genetically influenced adverse drug reactions.
Antimicrobial Update: A focus on treatment recommendations in urinary tract infections (UTI)
Description: What are the most likely urinary tract infection (UTI) organisms? What are the
most common UTI risk factors? What are the current recommendations for assessment and
treatment of UTI? Learn the answers to these questions in this case‐based program.
Objectives:
- Identify the most likely causative pathogens in urinary tract infections.
- Describe the clinical presentation of common urinary tract infections.
- Design a plan of care for the person with a urinary tract infection.
Prescribing in the Presence of Impaired Renal Function
Description: What places your patient at risk for developing renal insufficiency? How can you
work with the patient to avoid this problem? How should commonly prescribed medication use
be adjusted in the presence of impaired renal function. Learn the latest recommendations for
protecting renal health and prescribing medications in the presence of impaired renal function.
Objectives
- Describe the impact of select conditions on renal health.
- Identify factors influencing the choice of medications to protect renal health in the person
with the above mentioned conditions.
- Recognize the common presentation of renal failure.
- Identify the adjustments needed to prescribe select medications in the presence of
impaired renal function.
Depression: A primary care approach to assessment and intervention
Description: This program gives tips on prescribing SSRIs, SNRI, TCAs, mood stabilizers and
other psychotherapeutic agents in the treatment of depression in primary care setting.
Objectives:
- Recognize the current recommendations for the treatment of depressive disorders.
- Explain the mechanism of action of commonly prescribed psychotropic medications used
for the treatment of depressive disorders.
- Identify common adverse effects and therapeutic advantages of the above‐mentioned
medications.
As Seen on TV: What's in the OTC and Herbal Products Your Patients Are Taking?
Description: Your patients are bombarded with advertisements for products that claim to improve
everything from memory to sexual function to body shape and weight. Attend this session to find out
about what is in these products and how helpful or harmful these OTC products can be.
Objectives:-
Identify healthcare products available direct to consumers that are extensively advertised
on television.
- Describe the ingredients and proposed therapeutic effects of these products.
- Discuss potential benefits and problems that can result from the use of these products.
