Raun D. Melmed, MD, is a developmental and behavioral pediatrician and co-founder and Medical Director of the Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center. He is also Director of the Melmed Center in Scottsdale, Arizona and is an Adjunct Senior Researcher at the Translational Genomics Institute in Phoenix. Dr. Melmed earned his medical degree at the University of Cape Town in Cape Town, South Africa, completed his internship at Tel Hashomer Hospital in Israel, his residency in Pediatrics at Brookdale Hospital in New York and a fellowship at the Children's Hospital Medical Center in Boston, where he was an Instructor at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Melmed is a member of the Society for Behavioral Pediatrics and the Academy of Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine, and he is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is board certified in Pediatric and in Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics.
The author of more than 50 publications, he has made presentations nationally and internationally. His most recent book is titled Autism Early Intervention and he also authored Succeeding with Difficult Children. Dr. Melmed has set up nationally recognized physician training programs for the early identification of infants and toddlers with developmental and behavioral concerns and more recently authored a program geared toward the early screening for autism spectrum disorders. He is currently an investigator of studies involving family linkage studies, proteomics and gene expression in autism as well as being principal investigator of studies of novel psychopharmacological agents in the treatment of autism, Fragile X and ADHD.

Leslie Rubin, M.D., Research Associate Professor, Department of Pediatrics, Morehouse School of Medicine; Co-director, Southeast Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit, Emory University; President, Institute for the Study of Disadvantage and Disability; Medical Director, Developmental Pediatrics Specialists, Atlanta, Georgia.
Dr. Rubin is originally from South Africa where he trained in Pediatrics and came to the USA to specialize in Neonatology and then in Developmental Medicine. He was initially at the Hospitals of the Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland Ohio and then moved to The Children’s Hospital in Boston and the Harvard Medical School where he spent 14 years. In 1994 he moved to Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia and in 2004 he moved to the Department of Pediatrics at Morehouse School of Medicine.
Since 1998 he has been active in the Southeast Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit at Emory, which is one of a network of 10 centers in North America that focus on children’s environmental health.
In 2004 founded the Institute for the Study of Disadvantage and Disability (ISDD), which is dedicated to improving awareness and understanding of the relationship between social and economic disadvantage and disabilities in children, addressing health disparities, providing outreach education and training, and influencing health care policy and practices.
Currently he provides interdisciplinary clinical services for children with Autism, Cerebral Palsy and other developmental disabilities at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Hughes Spalding where he teaches residents and medical students from Emory and Morehouse schools of Medicine.
His research projects include Break the Cycle of Environmental Health Disparities, one goal of which is to cultivate future leaders to address the challenges of health disparities, Healthcare without Walls, which works on ‘building’ Medical Homes for Homeless Children; and Project GRANDD, which serves grandparents of low income minority communities who are the primary care givers for their grandchildren with disabilities

He is involved in international organizations, most notably in Chile, where he regularly participates in educational programs and projects.
He has had a number of publications, most significantly the co-editor with Allen Crocker of Delivery of Medical Care for Children and Adults with Developmental Disabilities. 2nd Edition, and of Safe and Healthy School Environments Oxford University Press, with his colleagues at the Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit at Emory – Howard Frumkin, Robert Geller and Janice Nodvin. As well as Senior Editor of 4 monographs published annually in International Journals on the Break the Cycle research projects. He is currently working on the 3rd edition of the developmental disabilities text.
