Gregory Firestone, Ph.D.
Gregory Firestone, Ph.D. is the Director of the Conflict Resolution Collaborative in the University of South Florida (USF) College of Medicine. Dr. Firestone has served on the faculty of the USF Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine for twenty-five years and the USF College of Public Health for seven years. He has taught negotiation, conflict resolution, interpersonal communication, mediation, behavioral medicine, dispute resolution system design, and inter-professional ethics to medical students, graduate students, residents and/or post graduate professionals.
Dr. Firestone is a licensed psychologist, mediator, negotiation and mediation trainer, and dispute resolution system consultant. He is 1) a Florida Supreme Court certified appellate, circuit court, dependency and family mediator, 2) an Association for Conflict Resolution (ACR) Advanced Practitioner and 3) a Diplomate Member of the Florida Academy of Professional Mediators. Gregory Firestone, Ph.D. serves as primary trainer for numerous mediation certification courses approved by the Florida Supreme Court and/or ACR.
He currently serves on the Florida Supreme Court Alternative Dispute Resolution Rules and Policy Committee (including seven years as Vice Chair) and has served on two Task Forces appointed by the Chief Justice of the Florida Supreme Court. Dr. Firestone serves on the Editorial Board of Family Court Review and has also served on the Florida Supreme Court Mediation and Arbitration Training Committee as well as the boards of various state and national mediation organizations.
Gregory Firestone, Ph.D. has extensive healthcare delivery experience including more than 25 years of independent clinical psychology practice, clinical practice within a multi-specialty medical clinic, and affiliate staff service in numerous hospitals. Dr. Firestone has worked closely with other medical specialists including liaison to diabetes and otology medical clinics and is co-author of the Interpersonal Behavior Survey published by Western Psychological Services.
He was the Mediation Consultant for the Florida Medical Quality Assurance Inc. (FMQAI), the Florida Medicare Quality Improvement Organization. He helped implement the Medicare Beneficiary Mediation Program in Florida and designed the FMQAI Comprehensive Complaint Resolution Program which received national attention for promoting a system of collaborative approaches for resolving Medicare beneficiary complaints with healthcare providers, hospitals, and nursing homes. For seven years, Dr. Firestone mediated Medicare beneficiary complaints involving both the beneficiary and the Medicare provider(s).
Gregory Firestone, Ph.D. lectures nationally and internationally on negotiation and mediation at numerous conferences and institutes, and he has conducted mediation training for courts and/or government programs throughout the U.S. and internationally. Dr. Firestone is coauthor of Mediation Works: Make It Work For You, a mediation orientation video published by the Florida Supreme Court and has published numerous articles on negotiation and mediation.
Dr. Firestone has received numerous awards including the 2000 Florida Supreme Court Dispute Resolution Center Award of Appreciation, the 2002 Association for Conflict Resolution Presidential Award, the 2011 Florida Academy of Professional Mediators Merit Award and the 2012 Florida Supreme Court DRC Excellence in Alternative Dispute Resolution Award.
