Nilam J. Soni, M.D., FHM is an academic hospitalist and Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Dr. Soni has led various continuing medical education events through national professional societies, including the Society of Hospital Medicine, and he is the course director for Updates in Hospital Medicine 2013. Dr. Soni's academic interests have focused on clinical applications of portable ultrasound, including ultrasound-guided procedures and bedside diagnostic ultrasound, and he is the director of the procedure service at his institution. His other academic interests include simulation-based education, evidence-based medicine, and global health.
Dan Dressler, M.D., MSc, SFHM is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Emory University’s School of Medicine, and he has been a leader in the field of hospital medicine over the past decade. He is the current director of Internal Medicine Teaching Services at Emory University Hospital, Hospital Medicine Associate Division Director for Education, and Associate Program Director for the J. Willis Hurst Internal Medicine Residency Program at Emory University’s School of Medicine. He was founding Director of Hospital Medicine at Emory University Hospital and served in that position for 5 years prior to assuming the Associate Division Director role. He was recently awarded the Department of Medicine’s Educator Impact Award. Within the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM), he served on and chaired the Core Curriculum Committee and is co-editor of the Core Competencies in Hospital Medicine (Journal of Hospital Medicine, 2006). He served as SHM’s 2011 Annual Meeting Course Director and on SHM’s Board of Directors (2009-2012). He is co-editor of a new major textbook, Principles and Practice of Hospital Medicine, published in 2012.
Efren Manjarrez, M.D., SFHM is the Associate Chief of the Division of Hospital Medicine and Associate Chief Patient Safety and Quality Officer at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He graduated from the University of California School of Medicine in San Diego, and then completed a Combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics Residency at the University of Miami/ Jackson Memorial Hospital. He co-founded one of the first Med Peds hospitalist groups in the US. He was the first Director of Hospital Medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He completed a Faculty Development Program in General Internal Medicine at UNC Chapel Hill as well as receiving advanced training in quality Improvement at the Institute for Healthcare Research at Intermountain Healthcare in Salt Lake City. His professional interests are the handoff of hospitalized patients, perioperative cardiac care, medical education, and quality improvement.
Lenny Feldman, M.D., SFHM, FAAP, FACP is an Assistant Professor in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics and a hospitalist in the Division of General Internal Medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He serves as the program director for the Johns Hopkins Med-Peds Urban Health Residency, the track director for the Osler IM Urban Health Primary Care Track, as an associate program director for the Osler Internal Medicine Residency, and as the Director of the General Medicine Comprehensive Consultation Service.
As a hospitalist, program builder, and a specialist in resident and hospitalist education, Dr. Feldman has focused his research on consult medicine, safe transitions, on-line education, and systematic reviews. Other interests include patient education, urban medicine, evidence-based medicine, and quality improvement. He is the editor-in-chief for SHM Consultative and Perioperative Medicine Essentials for Hospitalists and an Associate Editor for the Journal of Hospital Medicine.

This program is designed for internal medicine and family medicine physicians who primarily care for hospitalized patients. Nurse practitioners, physician assistants, residents, fellows, and allied health professionals are also invited to participate.
| Program Purpose / Objectives |
Course Description:
The Updates in Hospital Medicine 2013 course is a continuing medical education designed to provide a review of the most recent medical literature relevant to the care of hospitalized patients. Using an interactive, case-based format, the key highlights from all major areas of internal medicine and its specialties will be presented. Strong emphasis will be placed on how recent advances described in the medical literature can be incorporated into current clinical practice. An expert panel of distinguished academic physicians from around the country will present didactic lectures and address questions from the audience. The didactic lectures are scheduled during the days at sea in 3-4 hour blocks to allow participants sufficient time to absorb the educational content while enjoying the cruise. Updates in Hospital Medicine 2013 will take place onboard the Silhouette, one of Celebrity Cruises’ newest and most luxurious ships, as it cruises through the eastern Caribbean Sea.
Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will:
- Gain knowledge on the latest developments and techniques as well as critical decision-making that will help identify the best clinical solution for specific problems in each anatomic area.
- Receive education about new areas (techniques and technology), which may lead to the adoption of new procedures, products, or new training in specific areas;
- Gain comprehensive information on complications (avoidance and treatment) and patient safety to promote better practices and improved patient outcomes, creating a safer environment for patients by avoiding complications and problems.
A wide array of literature from major medical journals in internal medicine and its specialties will be presented.
