Faculty

Fred Leavitt, Ph.D. Professor of Psychology California State University, East Bay Hayward, California

Dr. Leavitt earned a Ph.D. in psychopharmacology from the University of Michigan and had a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California in Berkeley. He is a professor at Cal State University in Hayward and has also taught as a visiting professor at the National University of Singapore, Bogazici University in Turkey, the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands, and several other international universities. He recently co-wrote and published a book with his daughter titled Improving Medical Outcomes: The Psychology of Doctor/Patient Visits. He has written 10 other books and several articles and gives frequent talks to doctors on medical issues. Although not a philosopher by training, he found a solution to Hempel’s Raven paradox, a problem that had philosophers baffled for about 50 years.

He has been married “since Abraham Lincoln took office,” and he and his wife have two daughters (one of whom co-wrote his most recent book) and two grandchildren. He plays basketball three times a week with a bunch of other over-the-hill players, and he also enjoys trying to grow fruits and vegetables and solving cryptic crossword puzzles.
